According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were over 80,000 overdose deaths in one year, one of the highest on record. More specifically, 37 out of 38 jurisdictions with accessible synthetic opioid data reported year-over-year increases in overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids, and overdose deaths involving cocaine increased by 27%. These numbers represent an alarming public health issue that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and has shown little signs of relenting.
This public health issue has motivated us at Appriss Health to develop an answer: the OpenBeds Crisis Management Solution. Our Crisis Management Solution leverages the foundational OpenBeds platform, where referring providers can communicate with receiving providers, see bed availability in real-time, and refer patients to the appropriate level of care. With the Crisis Management Solution, crisis call center staff can communicate with mobile crisis units, see service availability in real-time, and dispatch them to handle crisis situations related to overdose and substance misuse.
The solution, which is largely based on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s core recommendations, streamlines the entire crisis management process—from incoming call, to assessment, to treatment, to disposition. It is capable of supporting collaboration with departments of behavioral health and development services, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and healthcare facilities, and various other behavioral health stakeholders.

Recently, Dr. Nishi Rawat, M.D., MBA, vice president at Appriss Health and co-founder of OpenBeds, discussed today’s overdose epidemic, including additional stats from the CDC, how states can use funding to combat it, and how our Crisis Management Solution is poised to play a major role.
