Integration of PDMP data into physicians’ daily workflow is a key step to increase efficiency and utilization of this very important tool. Monthly, more than 90 million patient encounters are managed through our integration solution, commonly known as Gateway.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania. For UPMC’s more than 6,000 physicians, Gateway’s technology has created greater efficiency in their day-to-day work, especially considering the state requires a query of the PDMP database each time an opioid or benzodiazepine is prescribed.
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, in 2018, Pennsylvania-based providers wrote 49.9 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, below the national average of 51.4. In a state of more than 12 million people, that equates to more than five million PDMP queries for opioids alone.
The implementation of Gateway has proven to reduce a clinician’s time investment into a PDMP query from minutes to a few seconds, offering a new level of convenience and encouraging compliance with state requirements.
A UPMC pain clinic physician noted, “This has changed my life. The amount of time saved is unbelievable.”
